All civilizations call the emptiness or the void as the beginning of the Universe: “In the beginning…the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep...”  [1]

The emptiness is a source of unlimited energy that existed before the beginning of time; according to Chinese philosophy, when in the emptiness the energy reached certain point it transformed and became Yin, then it reached another point and it transformed again and became Yang. Yin and Yang are the two forces or types of energy that cannot exist without each other, the two opposites that attract: day and night, black and white, sound and silence, movement and stillness, male and female.  

The emptiness is one that gave birth to Yin and Yang that are two and gave birth to three that gave birth to everything that exist. This is the basic principle of Chinese philosophy that is similar to the principle of life in all civilizations yet it is beyond our ability to comprehend but what it means is that everything in the universe is energy or a form of energy and that nothing in the universe exists outside the context of the cosmic trinity: heaven, man and earth.

Nothing in the universe is static, everything changes and as it changes it generates imbalance between Yin and Yang. As Einstein discovered, energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be transformed and it is through transformation that we are able to reach balance between Yin and Yang, which allows us to be better, to do better and ultimately to be happier.

There is an energy force or life force that in Chinese metaphysics is known as Qi, this is the same energy force or life force identified as Prana by the Hindus or as Pneuma by the Greeks. Different cultures have different words to relate to this energy force but no matter how we call it, it is everywhere, within ourselves and around ourselves, throughout the whole universe.

Based on empirical studies developed in China thousands of years ago there are three sources of Qi and these sources of Qi are Heaven, Man and Earth. The three sources of Qi  provide three sources of luck that are heaven luck, man luck and earth luck; the combination of these three lucks results into one real or actual luck.

Heaven luck is based on the cosmic components at the time of birth which are represented by five energy phases known as the five Chinese elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. These elements are originated by the presence of planets Jupiter, Mars, Saturn, Venus and Mercury; everything in the universe has some of these elements and the way they interact determines the quality of energy in any given moment of time.

In Chinese metaphysics the elements at the time of birth are established through the Four Pillars of Destiny that is a scientific technique which calculates a birth chart or Bazi chart; the relationship between the elements in a birth chart reveals one’s personality, potentials, wealth capacity, health quality and quality of personal relationships; the four pillars of destiny can also be used for fortune telling to identify future situations and be able to take informed decisions.

The elements at the time of birth cannot be changed for this reason heaven luck cannot be modified but this is just one third of our actual luck; through the four pillars of destiny we can become aware of our strengths and weaknesses as well as of the threats and opportunities that surround us as a result of heaven luck and with this information we can optimize the strengths, diminish the weaknesses, avoid the threats and maximize the opportunities manipulating human luck through human actions and earth luck through feng shui.
